No
single theme this month – just variety.
It’s
a dangerous world,
as we acknowledge the dilemma facing parents as they prepare children
to cope in the Editorial. The world-wide theme appears in Charles
Pragnell’s article as well, as he reviews the way that theories
can be applied in different countries – with disastrous effects
if they’re wrong.
We
focus on two individuals who have changed
things for children :
- Keith White writes about Korczak, and his influence on child care
and on Keith personally.
- David Lane has interviewed David Hinchliffe, who has done much to
mould legislation and influence Government in his eighteen years in
Parliament.
There
are a couple of reports of events
:
- an encouraging progress report from the National Children’s
Bureau, and
- a piece about the PAT Conference which the media have seized on.
Practice
issues
include :
- the use of intensive interaction by Hesley,
- the use of the game of peek-a-boo in communicating with children,
- a warning that reducing risk may leave children unable to cope with
it,
- a Dutch system for homeless young people, and
- a book review about residential child care.
Then
there are the regular columns
with :
- a report on the APPGC,
- Gus Greene looking back on a promotion, and
- experiencing Christmas in an assessment centre
- and in News Views, we talk of books, statistics,
NMT, archaeology, paedotrophia today and quite a few more things.
How’s that for variety?
