Toni Julià
Director of the European Office of the International Association
of Social Educators (AIEJI)

The European Symposium of Social Educators Professional Associations, was held as it was expected on 7th,8th,9th and 10th of October in Barcelona (Spain). Twelve out of the twenty –two associations we invited participated in the meeting. There were Professional Associations from Denmark, Holland, Iceland, Italy, Norway, the Russian Federation, Spain, Switzerland and the United Kingdom. Unfortunately the rest of the invited countries could not attend the meeting, some of them due to economical reasons, some others never answered to our invitation . We hope there will be more associations coming in future meetings. We were a group of 30 people, it was possible to work in a convenient way and to set the basis for future meetings and works.

All people participating in the Symposium were very active and willing to work in order to achieve the inherent goals for our subject:. Active participation of social educators in the definition of their professional qualifications that allows for mobility of professionals within the European Union without any compensating measures.

Here is the Final Declaration for your knowledge and I hope that you can spread its contents within your country. The European Office of the International Association of Social Educators is working to set together and elaborate the materials and documents that were provided and collected during the Symposium. We are also preparing our annual report of activities, where we can see that the goals set by our Plan of Work have been basically achieved.

At the moment I am working on the European Office of AIEJI’s Plan of Work for 2004, I would appreciate if you could think of issues coming up from the professional practice in your countries that can be backed by our international association. We would join them together and think of actions on behalf of your ideas.

I hope you take active part in this process, you should send us your contributions before December 15th

I made myself a snowball,
As perfect as could be,
I thought I'd keep it as a pet,
And let it sleep with me.

I made it some pyjamas,
And a pillow for its head,
Then last night it ran away,
But first - it wet the bed!
