The
Forum School held a book week with a difference last term when
they welcomed author Fay Weldon to open their new library. After
cutting the ribbon, she was presented with a bouquet of flowers
by Year 6 pupil Johnny Feinstein.

Fay Weldon cuts the ribbon, closely observed by
James Selvanadan, Charlie Owen,
Thomas Parson, Gavaize Thomas, Harry Clarke and Rosie King
Children’s
author and illustrator Pippa Unwin, famous for her animal stories,
was involved in a workshop session in each of the classes, and
famous marbler and book-binder Anne Muir demonstrated her craft
and helped the pupils make their own books at the end of an exciting
week.
Gay
Waters, head at the Forum School said: “The school was buzzing
with all the different activities to do with books. As well as
our visitors we had a very lively assembly where staff and students
dressed as favourite book characters and during the week Waterstones
ran a book shop where students could spend their pocket money.
Groups also visited the local library so they could learn about
people who work with books.”
Literacy
co-ordinator, Rosie King, said: “Books often have a calming
influence on students; they really enjoy looking at them and quickly
learn how to handle and respect them. Some have a book from home
that is really special and they carry it around with them. Thomas
the Tank Engine is a favourite, along with Elmer, Postman Pat
and the Disney characters.”

The
new library provides a quiet area for all students to enjoy books.
A new software system has been introduced enabling all students
and staff to borrow a book for a week.
