Dear Editor

Keith White talks a lot of sense when it comes to play. The problem nowadays is actually finding the space and time to let children play by themselves. Everything seems to be so desperately structured that kids get very little time to just be – well kids. As a child, my mother used to say that you had to get bored in order to find yourself something creative to do. Now we plan their days to the letter with everything from after-school clubs to forced hobbies of all types. Parents need to get together and agree that it’s OK for their children to just muck about – the equivalent of kicking a tin can around in the street. That is the only way they will work out relationships with their peers, learn about leadership, teamwork, everything. It’s time we gave children time to just be children.

Dear Editor

I too saw Someone to Watch Over Me and found it utterly depressing. How do people get themselves into these situations? Why should we end up paying for social workers to sort out their problems? People need encouragement to take responsibility for their own lives, not expect the professionals to mop up after them.

Dear Editor

The article on Kitezh was very interesting and moving to hear how these children are being given a chance they wouldn’t otherwise get. It is not until we learn more about practices in other countries that we realise that our looked after children are comparatively lucky. For the children at Kitezh receiving a well-rounded education and with a positive future ahead, there must be hundreds more in Russian orphanages, just left to a basic existence.

Dear Editor

I think the Government’s idea of encouraging children to try all kinds of exercise (Cuttings, January) is terrific. My memory of PE is miserable – cross country and netball, which I was useless at. The chance to try something like yoga or tai chi would have been great – and it’s good for relieving stress. God knows today’s youngsters have enough of that. I only hope the plan is actually put into place, and that it’s not some cynical pre-Election promise.
