For
the first time since we started, the Webmag is not coming out on the
first of the month; the June issue is coming out in May! We like to
publish on the dot, but matters beyond our control have necessitated
the early issue.

We
hope you like it; there’s a mixture of the topical and the sort
of article which we think will still be relevant to good practice
years from now.
The
topical includes :
-
the Editorial on the current emphasis on play,
- Dave Wiles’s biting reaction to a Minister’s suggestion
that young offenders should wear uniforms when doing community
service,
- Laura Steckley’s diatribe against short-term thinking
at the expense of people’s lives, and
- the report on the latest FICE meeting, which includes information
about foyers and Glen Mills School, as well as
- some of the items in News Views.
Good
practice issues include :
-
Keith White’s look at child-friendly yearly patterns and
rituals – the opposite of short-termism, offering children
a secure place in their wider community and its history,
- a review on the Young Persons’ Conference held last year
in Glasgow, with the lessons to be learnt in managing such events,
- Valerie Jackson’s piece on the importance of handling
bedtime routines properly,
- an advertisement review of Noel Janis-Norton’s book on
coping with children’s behaviour.
Then
there are the personal interest stories :
-
the next first-person account of being in care, which focuses
on a bear,
- and, as usual a poem by a child in foster care.
We
hope you find something you like.
