February’s
a depressing time of the year, associated with cold weather, flu and
little to cheer one up, but this time on the childcare front, it has
been an excellent month with conferences brimming with good ideas
and good practice.
In
this issue we have reports from :
-
the Blueprint Project, which aims to put children first and give
them a say about the services they need.
- Momentum, where a feasibility study is being undertaken into the
idea of setting up a focus for good residential childcare practice
in England. (The proposal is also backed by FICE/CfC in their policy
paper.)
- the CCCF day conference on the National Commission for Children
proposal;
- the NCB / Action for Aftercare day conference on good practice
in aftercare.

All
of these papers contain good ideas and challenges.
A
number of our articles are particularly challenging :
-
Keith White writes from a Christian perspective to urge us to look
at the implications of Biblical teaching for the way children should
be considered.
- Charles Pragnell takes the British child protection system apart,
questioning a lot of the assumptions on which practice has been
based over the last two decades.
- Rowan Dickman looks back over a long campaign to set standards,
and despite developments, still sees much to question.
We
also have :
-
a nice little piece about a Fullerton theatrical group using a proper
theatre,
- an article by Roy Thorne on the need to expect a lot of/for children
in care,
- a message from Ewan Anderson about the benefits of FICE/CfC membership,
and,
of course, Cuttings, with its usual pot pourri of sniffy pieces.
