Involving Children in Need in Assessments
A two-day training course: 7 and 8 May 2003
At NCB, 8 Wakley St, London EC1V 7QE

Course leaders: Sheryl Burton, Director, Social Inclusion, NCB
Ruth Dalzell, Manager, Young People in
Neighbourhoods, NCB
Di Hart, Principal Officer, Children in Public Care, NCB

Background
Since the adoption of the United Nations convention on the rights of the child, there has been a steady increase in the involvement of children and young people in decision-making, and an improvement in the skills and mechanisms for listening to them.

Yet despite the emphasis on an ecological and child centred approach within the DH framework for assessment of children in need and their families and LAC materials, recent inspections and thematic reviews have identified direct work with children as an area still in considerable need of development in social work practice. Listening to children also emerged as a central theme in the recent Laming inquiry report.

This two-day training course is an opportunity for practitioners to share their experiences and enhance their skills in this crucial area.

Aims and objectives
• To enable practitioners to understand and develop the skills necessary to involve children and young people effectively in assessments
• To explore the meaning of a child-centred and ecological approach with particular reference to issues of diversity
• To focus on relevant theoretical knowledge such as Child Development and Attachment
• To build the necessary skills for effective collaboration with all relevant others to ensure the optimum involvement of children in the assessment process
• To consider the implications for practice in involving children from the launch of the forthcoming integrated children’s system.
• To identify and develop the necessary skills for communicating with children of different age groups
• To focus on the principles of involvement and participation and their meaning for direct practice

Who should attend?
The course is relevant fro front line social workers and other professionals who are significantly involved in the assessment of children under the DH framework

We are pleased to announce Senator Landon Pearson as our conference patron. In addition to duties as a Senator, Landon Pearson advises the Minister of Foreign Affairs on children's rights. She co-chaired Out From the Shadows, which brought together 54 youth delegates from Canada, the USA, and Latin America including the Caribbean, to tell their tragic stories as youth exploited in the sex trade. Senator Pearson also chaired a Federal Committee Against Commercial Sexual Exploitation of Children and Youth and, in 1997-98, co-chaired the Special Joint House Committee on Child Custody and Access.
