The Webmag Editorial looks at the need for a balanced and informed debate about child deaths in abuse cases. Roy Grimwood questions the Youth Justice Board's approach to sanctions. Keith White asks whether we can justify residential childcare - or any other services for that matter. Gus Greene recounts young people facing the outcome of a court case. Even Kathleen Lane's travelogue deals with some serious issues this month, while Terry Hoon asks you to look at what you're wearing. Every one of these pieces raises questions of one sort or another. The International Section majors on the future of FICE and AIEJI, the two main international professional associations for people working with children and young people, which have both been reviewing their roles. In what direction should they go? What targets should they set themselves? If you want to know more about them, this month's magazine describes how AIEJI was set up and what it has achieved as the International Association for Social Educators, and next month's will include a similar piece on FICE. Also in the International Section is an insightful and well-argued critique of children's services in Australia - again, challenging and asking questions, and in the process, setting professional standards. Questions, questions; but if we don't ask questions, we'll never get any answers. |
