Welsh charity works with professionals to give babies a better start in life
The National Deaf Children's Society Wales (NDCS Wales) aims to help deaf children get a better start in life by offering health, education and social services professionals in Wales an opportunity to work together. The NDCS Wales Conference 2003: Early Identification and the challenges of the early years, is being held on Thursday 20 November, 9am-4pm at the Metropole Hotel, Temple Street, Llandrindod Wells, Powys.
The introduction of New Born Hearing Screening in Welsh hospitals, which means that deaf children can now be identified within months of their birth, is giving parents longer to consider their deaf child's education, communication, health and social needs. However, earlier identification for deaf children is also bringing new challenges to the services involved in supporting and caring for deaf children and their families.
David Heap, Director of NDCS Wales, comments:
"Services now need to reflect on their practice to make sure newly identified deaf children and families get the support they need. We hope that the conference will bring together professionals from health, social and education services to work together and explore how to provide high quality services in the early years."
Speakers at the conference include: Jane Davidson AM, Minister for Education and lifelong learning; Gwen Carr, Director of UK Services for NDCS; Dr Cerilan Rogers, Director Public Health Service; David Heap, Director of NDCS Wales. Parents will also be speaking and sharing their experiences of what it's like to bring up a deaf child.
Delegates also have the option of attending two of four workshops. The workshops include: Promoting well-being in deaf children, Deaf-friendly nurseries and pre-schools, Language sensitive services in a Welsh and multi-ethnic context, and Family Friendly principles.
The cost of the conference is £65 + VAT. Parents or guardians of deaf children will be given a discounted rate. For further details please contact Karen at NDCS Wales Tel: 029 2037 3474 or email ndcswales@ndcs.org.uk
Stories from the edge - Youth Work Conference
Frontier Youth Trust, Youth For Christ, YMCA, Church Army, Greenbelt,
Worth Unlimited, Churches Together England, Hands and Feet and Scripture Union.
For many the '…at the edge' conferences have become something of a homecoming - a place to be and make sense of the tensions, busy-ness and complexities of connecting Gods story to the stories of young people.
'Stories from the edge' - not so much a glitzy homecoming but more an earthy experience of theology, practice, friendship and ideas. The context is not one of paid, unpaid, professional, part-time or full-time but one of passion, community and creativity.
At the 2004 conference Stories from the edge we will be joined by
Adrian Plass (Stories with wit, poignancy and challenge)
Ben Okafor (Songs with a heart felt plea for justice, truth and Love)
Andy and Liz Dorton (creativity and challenge big time - in one couple!)
Rev Roger Sainsbury (ex Bish of Berking and new chair of NYA),
There will be opportunity through workshops
* to debate - Issues surrounding multi faith
* to hear and explore 'Story' - Stories of success with connexions, Young people's stories and evangelism, What's the use/impact of stories
* to reflect on practice - Black youth work, Art and drama and youth work, Spiritual disciplines and youth work, Surviving youth work for the long haul
For those of you who have an inclination toward, challenge, ideas, retreat, and change please involve us in your story - Stories from the Edge 23rd - 25th April 2004 at All saints Pastoral Centre London Colney.
