We
have two pieces by Keith White in this issue - his regular column
and a paper he gave at a SIRCC conference in Scotland. The first talks
of the ordinary things of working with children and young people;
yet it is the ordinary things which are special in the way that they
provide the children with good experiences, in the healing that they
offer to counter previous hurts suffered, and in the job satisfaction
they offer workers too. The conference paper is more theoretical,
looking at the needs of children which need to be met. They complement
each other nicely.

It
has been the conference season, and while we have little to report
from the annual social services jamboree (in Newcastle this year),
the National Children’s Bureau laid on an excellent day event
at Aston Villa. It was at this conference that the NCB launched the
report it had produced on Momentum, which we support in our Editorial.
We’ve
got a piece from Kim Evans of the National Child Minding Association
about the NCMA’s drive to recruit nannies that we reported on
in Cuttings last month, another article by Di Gower, this
time on student placements, and a piece about girlguiding and people
with disabilities.
We
have a new In Care story, introducing Mikey and Jon-Jon,
and the other regular columns covering care for people with learning
disabilities, training for residential child care workers and the
latest meetings of the APPG. Cuttings includes pieces on the problems
of teenagers in care, festivals, play, Barnardo’s and learning
disabilities.
And
next month, the editorial team will be augmented by Alison Marlow.
We look forward to her joining us.
