Youngsters try their hand at a range of careers

by Lesley Durston

Students tried their hand at bricklaying, woodwork and a range of other practical skills during a special careers week at Hill House School.

Youngsters met a selection of workers who demonstrated different aspects of their jobs, including a bricklayer who made a barbecue, a carpenter who made a child’s toy and a policeman. They also visited a local farm to see for themselves some of the tasks undertaken on a daily basis in an agricultural environment.

Andy Evans, Deputy Head at Hill House, said, “The youngsters clearly got a lot of enjoyment in participating in the activities and found this a worthwhile experience. We noticed that some students participated in activities for up to an hour which was excellent. The careers week was such a success that we are planning to make it an annual event.”

A piece of useless information........

In Shakespeare's time, mattresses were secured on bed frames by ropes. When you pulled on the ropes the mattress tightened, making the bed firmer to sleep on. Hence the phrase...."goodnight, sleep tight."
