A
new Group-wide signing system has prompted a major drive to improve
communication with students at Broughton House College, according
to Head Bob Noble.
Staff
are hugely enthusiastic about the new system called Signalong,
which offers great flexibility. The programme is still in the
early stages of introduction with students, but already there
seem to be significant benefits.
Bob
Noble said, “Staff found the alternative systems quite rigid
and prefer the flexibility of the Signalong approach. All the
evidence is pointing to the fact that this system suits students
and staff alike better. The other obvious benefit of introducing
a Group-wide system is that when students move between establishments
they will be familiar with the signing system being used.”
The
project is being led by care assistant and former instructor David
Pache at Broughton House. David completed the Group training on
the new system together with colleagues from each of the Hesley
schools and colleges, and is now acting as trainer for over 80
staff at Broughton House.

A
core vocabulary of around 20 key words is the first stage in the
Group-wide initiative, and once this has been established, specific
words in use at the College will be added. David is working with
the Signalong company to produce a tailor-made Signalong system
for Broughton House. Signalong are helping in this introductory
stage by producing Signalong vocabulary booklets, which will be
available for all staff.
David
said, “There is no doubt from our initial impressions that
the Signalong system is working very well here. If we can improve
our students’ ability to communicate, their anxiety and
their confusion will reduce.
“As
well as introducing the new system we are also encouraging staff
to take a look at the way they communicate, and question
whether they are doing it effectively. It really has been a powerful
lesson for us all.”
